The first six chapters are dedicated to the epidemiology and diagnosis of depression including socio-economic aspects, overall principles of care and treatment goals. In Chapter 6 it also details the methodology how this review has been developed. The main body of the text starting from Chapter 10 is then dedicated to the different aspects of the use of antidepressants: their mechanism of action, the effectiveness and side effect profile of each antidepressant based on the available literature from clinical studies and meta-analysis, the role of combination and augmentation strategies including other pharmacological options, and principles of continuation and prophylactic treatment. The reader will find comprehensive information on these topics for all major antidepressants, divided in chapters according to their main mechanism of action.
